NEXUS is the joint US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) / Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Trusted Traveler Program. The official NEXUS photo is captured by CBP or CBSA at the enrollment interview — there is NO photo upload in the TTP application portal at ttp.cbp.dhs.gov. Most "NEXUS photo" searches come from users renewing their US passport, Canadian passport, or Canadian PR card alongside the NEXUS application. Here is how each path works.
You apply at ttp.cbp.dhs.gov by completing a profile, paying the $50 USD non-refundable application fee, and submitting for conditional approval. Both US and Canadian citizens (plus US LPRs and Canadian PRs) can apply. Conditional approval takes 6–18 months currently due to backlog. There is no photo upload at this stage.
After conditional approval, you are scheduled for an in-person interview at a NEXUS Enrollment Center. Canadian-side centers are run by CBSA; US-side by CBP. At the interview, both agencies conduct a joint review — you sit with a CBSA officer and a CBP officer simultaneously. You are fingerprinted, your iris is scanned (NEXUS uses iris recognition at the air-mode kiosks), and your photo is taken. This biometric package is shared between CBSA and CBP.
The official NEXUS photo is matched against you at every NEXUS lane and self-service kiosk arrival at participating airports (Toronto Pearson, Montreal Trudeau, Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Ottawa, Edmonton, Winnipeg, plus US preclearance facilities). You can update the photo later by walking into any NEXUS Enrollment Center — no online update available.
NEXUS membership is linked to your passport. CBP / CBSA will not approve the application if your primary passport expires within 1 year. Renew it first — use the 2×2 inch (51×51 mm) US passport spec or 50×70 mm Canadian passport spec depending on citizenship.
Dual citizens applying with both passports often arrive at the enrollment interview with the wrong-size passport photo if they had one prepared. NEXUS does not need a user-supplied photo at all — bring valid passports and the interview officer captures the biometric photo.
Both CBP and CBSA align with the November 2023 State Department glasses ban for the official enrollment photo. Officers ask you to remove glasses. Iris scans require glasses removal anyway. NEXUS lanes at airports tolerate glasses on arrival.
NEXUS uses iris recognition at airport kiosks (in addition to face recognition). Hard contact lenses, certain eye conditions, or recent eye surgery can prevent iris enrollment. CBSA / CBP fall back to face-only matching at the lane if iris fails.
