TSA PreCheck enrollment does NOT require an applicant photo — only fingerprints and government-issued ID. The "photo" search traffic for PreCheck mostly comes from users confusing PreCheck with Global Entry (which DOES capture a photo at enrollment), or from users renewing their US passport at the same time as enrolling in PreCheck. Here is what each path actually needs.
You apply online at tsa.gov/precheck by completing a brief biographic form and selecting an enrollment center near you (around 500 IDEMIA and Telos locations across the US). There is no photo upload at any step of the online application. You pay $77.95 for a 5-year membership at the in-person appointment.
At the enrollment center, you bring two forms of government-issued ID (passport, REAL ID-compliant driver's license, military ID, permanent resident card — at least one must have a photo). The enrollment agent verifies your identity, takes fingerprints, and submits your biographics + prints to TSA for vetting. No photo is captured by TSA during this process. Your Known Traveler Number (KTN) arrives by email within 3–5 days for most applicants.
Once enrolled, you enter your KTN when booking flights and receive PreCheck on your boarding pass. At the airport, you use your existing government photo ID — usually the passport or driver's license — at the document checker. The optional Touchless ID feature at participating airports matches your face against your passport photo or REAL ID photo (whichever you presented during a prior trip) — but TSA does not store a separate "PreCheck photo".
You do not need to bring a photo to your TSA PreCheck appointment. Bringing one is harmless but it will not be used. Bring two government-issued IDs instead — one with a photo.
The photo ID you present at the enrollment center must be unexpired and government-issued. An expired driver's license with a current TSA-accepted photo will not work for enrollment. If your passport or REAL ID is close to expiration, renew it first using a 2×2 inch passport-style photo.
As of May 7, 2025, REAL ID is required to fly domestically (with or without PreCheck). If your state ID is not REAL ID-compliant, your US passport works at PreCheck checkpoints. The photo on either is used for Touchless ID matching where available.
TSA Touchless ID matches your live face against the photo TSA has on file (most commonly your passport photo). If your passport photo is 8–10 years old and your appearance has changed significantly, the match can fail and you fall back to manual document check. Renewing the passport with a recent photo speeds Touchless ID.
